Leidse Schouwburg (Theatre)

Indoor activity

The Leidse Schouwburg first opened its doors to the public on 1 October 1705, with the performance 'Belegering ende Ontset der Stadt Leyden' by Reynerius Bontius. Over the years the building has been frequently expanded and renovated, with a large-scale restoration in 1865. City architect Schaap designed the present auditorium in horseshoe form, inspired by Italian theatres. During the Second World War the theatre was also used as a shelter for people hiding from the occupying forces.
