Outdoor activity with some shelter

Apeldoorn is surprisingly different to other cities. This central point of the Veluwe is unique for its peaceful and spacious atmosphere. The streets are characterised by the many parks and tree-filled neighbourhoods. The nearby Het Loo palace lends the area a royal tint. With 155,000 inhabitiants, Apeldoorn is one of the top ten cities of the Netherlands. One of the most well-known attractions is the Apenheul monkey sanctuary which is even famous abroad. But there is much more: Apeldoorn has enough entertainment and culture to keep you busy for several days.

Apeldoorn is centrally located in the country and easy to reach by car, bicyce and train. The train from Utrecht takes just 45 minutes. A number of walking routes have been laid out through the city, such as the Royal Route which leads visitors to Koninklijk Palace Het Loo. The palace was first opened to the public in 1984 and offers a glimpse into the life of the Dutch royal family. The palace gardens have something to offer in every season, and breathe a 17th-century atmosphere. They provide a perfect excuse for a rest during your walk.

Children will find plenty to see in the Apenheul monkey sanctuary. This former country estate is now home to numerous monkey and ape species. The apenheul started out as the hobby of Rotterdam photographer Wim Mager who had a number of monkeys as pets in the 1960s when you could still buy them in high-street pet shops. He decided to create a monkey sanctuary where monkeys could roam free in natural surrondings. Interactive feeding sessions are held every day as well as many children's activities. If your children still have some energy to spare, why not take them to the family park Koningin Juliana Toren with its fifty different attractions?.

Performances, music and theatre take place in the Theatre and Congress Centre Orpheus. Each year around 300 performances take place. The theatre complex includes a music stage and film theatre Gigant . Pop music, film and stage arts are the main feature here. This theatre has an up-to-date programme for young and old and focusses on new initiatives. If there is nothing on the programme that appeals to you, don't worry: the city has plenty of museums and other attractions worth visiting so you are sure to find something to your taste.

The Coda Museum is a museum covering local history and modern art. The modern art is focused on jewellery and paper art and the museum has a permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions. A completely different museum is Folklore Museum In de Zevende Hemel This museum has an eclectic collection of curious items on themes such as Saint Nicholas, Easter, and the House of Orange which make interesting viewing.

The Orangerie shopping centre is a great place to shop. This covered shopping centre with ample car parking has a wide range of products and well-known brand names. The Korenstraat is also a friendly shopping street with boutiques and plenty of pavement caf├ęs where you can rest your feet.

If you have had enough of the city, there is plenty to do in the area. Hoog Soeren, Loenen and Hoenderloo are all attractive places to visit with plenty to do, for example Wildlife Park Het Aardhuis in Hoog Soeren, the Paper Factory in Loenen and the Veluwe Ranch in Hoenderloo.
with its beautiful surroundings and wide range of activities, Apeldoorn is a great choice for a weekend away.
