Groninger Schaatsmuseum (Skating Museum)

Indoor activity

Before the 15th century, people used a sharpened horse or cow bone to glide acros the ice. A sharp stick was used to aid propulsion, rather like today's langlaufers. Folowing this, blacksmiths made skates of iron. Examples can be seen in the Skating Museum in Sappermeer. The collection of Groninger Skates is particularly noteworthy, and the sculptures and cards are also worth seeing. Besides Dutch skating articles, skates from further afield are also featured. Opportunities for skating on natural ice may be few and far between, but true skating fans will find much to their liking in this museum.
